a reason why thousands of people visit Dorset Minnesota

the World" is small-town friendly, streets are lined
with boardwalks, casual porch swings and flower baskets.
The shops are filled with special items, from artistically-crafted
pottery and lamps to unique decor and antiques, that turn
houses into homes. Whether in a casual or slightly formal
setting, the restaurants serve the perfect meal around tables
of happy friends and families that makes the trip to Dorset

DORSET MAYOR
2011/2012
Kari Anderson
All it took was one lucky ballot for 20-year-old Kari
Anderson to become the mayor of Dorset last summer. And
that
ballot was one of the first to be cast in the annual
election.
When Kari and mother Rhonda went to Companeros shortly
after the 2010 election, “my mom told me that I should
vote for myself for the next year's Taste because it was
my
birthday and would be good luck," she said.
During the summer her mom cast a few more ballots in
Kari’s name, but at Taste of Dorset “when my name was
drawn, it was written in my handwriting,” she said.
“I had only voted for myself that one time, so it was my
lucky birthday ballot that won me the office.”
While the mayor’s title has not brought her much fame,
Kari, who works summers at Companeros and is a student at
Minnesota State University-Moorhead the rest of the year,
the office “definitely makes it easier for my professors
and classmates to remember who I am,” she said.
“I'm hoping that it will make me look good when I try to
get a job someday.”
During her one year term that will be over this summer she
hasn’t made any big proclamations, “but there have been
talks about building the Vikings a new stadium within the
city limits, so we may have to expand our parking
slightly.”
As mayor she received a fistful of gift certificates
redeemable at Dorset businesses, but she’s had time to
only to have her photo taken at Professor Nils.
. “I didn't get a raise, but the gift certificate I got
for Companeros is kind of like a bonus,” she said.
Kari, who lives on Potato Lake, is a Spanish Education
major and will going to Spain to study abroad in Valencia
until July, so she won’t be around Dorset much this summer
to perform any mayoral duties, whatever they may be, but
she’s enjoyed the title while she can.
“I've got my key to the city hanging on my wall at my
house in Moorhead, so when people don't believe me that
I'm
the mayor I have proof,” she said.
“It's always fun to run into people who know where Dorset
is because I usually get a pretty funny reaction when I
tell
them that I'm the mayor.”
And that funny reaction is what it should be, because,
after all, the Dorset’s mayor office is just one big joke.
So vote early, or late, on your birthday, or not, for an
office that’s all about luck.

Great
bike rides begin in Dorset

You
can bike to Dorset by starting at one end in Park Rapids,
from the other end in Walker, or from Akeley and Nevis
in between. Many prefer to anchor in Dorset, which has
a trailhead that will fill all your needs. There is plenty
of blacktopped parking, a playground to keep the kids
amused while you rest on a bench, toilets, picnic tables
and water from a hand pump. Plus, the trailhead is right
next to downtown Dorset for easy access, to restaurants
and shopping.
